BB Cream Application Tips

Because a BB cream is a combination of skincare and makeup, the application process can be a little confusing. Despite what you might think, beauty balms are fairly easy to apply. Use the warmth of your fingers or a damp beauty sponge to work the product in and melt it into the skin.

"The best way to apply BB cream would be with your hands. A brush isn't necessary as you don't have as much coverage that needs to be blended. When using your hands, the body heat changes the texture and makes it easier to manipulate," explains Sir John.

While makeup artist Kat Dorn likes to apply BB cream with her fingers, she uses a foundation brush when applying the product to other people. Because a BB cream isn't quite as thick as a traditional foundation and has the slip of a moisturizer, it's easy to blend for a seamless finish and looks like skin rather than cakey.

Performance

Texture: It has a light creamy texture that goes smoothly on the skin and blends easily.

Finish: The finish is very dewy and natural which I like, because it makes the skin look radiant and glowing, however, you can use a blotting paper if you don’t prefer that kind of finish to tone it down.

Coverage: Light to medium coverage (buildable) – Looks like skin and covers light blemishes. Evens out the skin tone very well. You’ll need to use a concealer for the under eye area and spots that need more coverage. Doesn’t cover acne.

Lasting Power: It does last for a couple of hours if you just use it by itself and do not set it. I’ve noticed that depending on what products I’m using under, it will either separate or sink well into the skin. This is something to keep in mind. If separation happens, don’t give up on it so quickly and check the skincare products you’re using underneath.

I have oily acne prone skin and this bb cream has not broken me out or irritated my skin in any way. Covers up the redness on my cheeks and does a nice job covering pores.
If you have issues with your skin texture this may cling a little onto flakes. It’s no major issue.

It helps that the bb cream has a creamy texture and is moisturizing and will mostly smooth everything out. However, make sure to take care of your skin texture first so your bb cream or foundation can stay and look better on the skin. It makes a great difference on how your makeup will perform.

Cover blemishes and imperfections without irritation

If you have acne-prone skin and need to conceal blemishes, Velve says your skin could benefit from a BB cream. The soothing minerals often found in BB cream formulations are beneficial for treating blemishes.

“Acne-prone skin will also benefit from the lighter textured product that allows the skin to breathe as well as the shorter ingredient list,” she adds.

A typical drugstore brand of BB cream can contain up to 40 different ingredients, better than the 70+ ingredients that a separate moisturizer, foundation, and sunscreen can contain.

The short answer is yes, BB creams are good for all skin types, including oily, dry, acne-prone, and more. But there are a few caveats to point out.

The other caveat, says Velve, is finding BB creams for all skin tones.

“Women of color can have a harder time finding a BB shade that suits their skin, and if the match is not right, BB creams can look ashy, a quality of the mineral-based SPF ingredients that most formulations contain,” she explains.

You can use a BB cream as part of your daily routine in place of foundation.

If your skin tends to be oily, the moisturizer in a BB cream may be enough. But if you have normal or dry skin, you may want to apply a moisturizer before your BB cream.

Here are the steps Velve recommends for applying BB cream:

  1. Apply BB cream to cleansed skin after any additional serums or moisturizers.
  2. Use a foundation brush, sponge, or your fingers to apply the cream. Velve likes to use her fingers because they warm up the product and allow it to blend into the skin more easily. Let the product settle on your skin.
  3. Apply foundation for more coverage and concealer in any problem areas. BB cream doesn’t need to be powdered, but the concealed areas might need to be set with a bit of powder.
  4. Add an additional SPF product if you know you’ll be in the sun for long periods of time.

What Is BB Cream?

BB cream is a foundation alternative that offers light coverage while being kind to the skin. BB can stand for a few different things, depending on who you ask: blemish balm, beauty balm, blemish base. while they're all correct, beauty balm is probably the most accurate description of what it does. Between smoothing, blurring, protecting, and tinting, it’s truly a beauty powerhouse product.

Despite often being credited as a Korean beauty trend, BB creams were actually first developed in Germany by Christine Schrammek, MD. And while we've all hopped on the bandwagon in the last few years, Dr. Schrammek’s original has existed since 1967.

She originally developed it as a stopgap for her patients to use on their skin after harsher treatments like peels and microdermabrasion, which left the skin red and inflamed. Instead of applying heavy foundation, which might have made the skin even more irritated and uncomfortable, Schrammek wanted to offer them something that would blur the imperfections and give a bit of coverage, but most importantly, be kind to the skin. And so BB cream was born.

Years later, the formula was perfected in South Korea, where K-pop and K-drama stars made note of its ability to transform skin easily. After consumers became obsessed with BB creams, the trend made its way to Europe and the United States, where it has become a mainstay beauty and skin product.
